So you'll need a floodgate upstream, and probably a grate downstream - and then you need somewhere for the water to go. Usually I just use it for creating farmland and for wells (useful in hospitals and prisons), but you can also use it for power generation or mist (makes dwarves happy but pretty risky), or for traps.įor farmland, you need a way to get water into the plot and then back out. The biggest thing you want to plan out is what you'll use the water for. The only caverns I found are mushroomless and my main question is whether I should search for the next cavern in the gap between my fortress and the surface or under the mushroomless. But if you're not ready for that, just build on another part of your starting area. Wiki says most 1st caverns spawn -10-11 z levels so I am wondering if its between the surface (elevation +2) and my fortress.
